Over the past 40 years, Kay Johnson has become nationally recognized for her work in maternal and child health policy, as a researcher, advocate, and consultant. Reducing the impact of poverty and racism and increasing access to services for women, children, and their families have been two of her lifelong goals. She is president of Johnson Policy Consulting (formerly known as Johnson Group Consulting). Her work at the Children’s Defense Fund, March of Dimes, George Washington University, and Johnson Consulting have shaped the direction of maternal and child health and Medicaid policy since 1984. She has been active in Medicaid and other health policy at the federal and state levels and an advisor to more than 45 states. Her expertise and publications encompass a wide range of women’s, children’s and family health issues. Prior to her policy work, Johnson worked for seven years providing direct services to low-income families in child care centers.
