Ichiro Kawachi

Ichiro Kawachi, MB.Ch.B., Ph.D., is the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Social Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is widely cited for his scholarship on the social determinants of population health. Kawachi is the coeditor (with Lisa Berkman) of the textbook Social Epidemiology. His other books include Behavioral Economics and Public Health (with Christina Roberto), Neighborhoods and Health (with Dustin Duncan), and The Social Epidemiology of the COVID-19 Pandemic (with Dustin Duncan and Stephen Morse). He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, and an elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Kawachi earned his medical degree and Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Otago, New Zealand.
