Alex Hoagland is an assistant professor of Health Economics at the University of Toronto's Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and serves as Co‑Director of the Canadian Centre for Health Economics. After earning his PhD in Economics from Boston University in 2022, he has centered his work on the role that information, decision-making, and behavioral biases play in shaping health decisions by patients and families, providers, and payers. Dr. Hoagland has published extensively in high‑impact economics and public health journals, examining themes such as inequities in insurance claim denials, access to preventive care, and innovation adoption; unexpected cost-sharing in the United States; and the role of the family in health production. His methodological toolkit includes quasi‑experimental designs, structural econometric models, and machine learning approaches to causal inference. His work consistently emphasizes promoting equitable access to high‑value care and reducing financial and administrative barriers in both U.S. and Canadian health systems.
